Have you ever imagined creating crochet circles using single crochet with different textures?
It’s amazing how many variations you can achieve with the same crochet stitch just by changing where you insert the hook.
The possibilities are endless! You can create anything from small coasters to rugs, bags, collars, baskets, hats, placemats, and more.
Today, I’ll show you how to crochet a circle using the single crochet stitch and explore 3 different variations: the Traditional or “V” stitch, the Ribbed stitch (working in the back loop of the previous row’s stitch), and the Camel stitch (working in the third loop of the previous row’s stitch).
We’ll use the same base pattern to guide us with increases row by row. This circle is crocheted in spiral rounds, so we won’t close each round at the end. Be sure to mark the first stitch of each round so you don’t lose your place.

Step-by-Step Instructions
To begin, make a magic ring.
1st Round ~ Chain 1, work 6 single crochet [6 stitches]
2nd Round ~ 6 increases (2 single crochet in each stitch) repeat 6 times [12 stitches]
3rd Round ~ {1 single crochet, 1 increase} repeat 6 times [18 stitches]
4th Round ~ {1 single crochet, 1 increase, 1 single crochet} repeat 6 times [24 stitches]
5th Round ~ {3 single crochet, 1 increase} repeat 6 times [30 stitches]
6th Round ~ {2 single crochet, 1 increase, 2 single crochet} repeat 6 times [36 stitches]
7th Round ~ {5 single crochet, 1 increase} repeat 6 times [42 stitches]
Option 1 – Traditional [V-Shaped Single Crochet]
From the 2nd round onward:
- Insert the hook under both loops of the stitch from the previous row.
- Yarn over and pull it through the loops of the stitch. You will have 2 loops on your hook.
- Yarn over again and pull through both loops on the hook
Option 2 – Ribbed
This is similar to Option 1, but you insert the hook only in the back loop of the stitch from the previous row.
Option 3 – Camel Stitch
This gorgeous option is made by inserting the hook into the back or third loop of the stitch from the previous row. Known as the Camel stitch, it’s sometimes called the back loop single crochet or third loop stitch.
It creates a unique texture that looks like knitting, forming a series of horizontal V’s on the right side of the fabric, resembling the texture of jersey or ribbed knitting.
This stitch looks its best when worked in spiral rounds.
