Classic Crochet Square #1: Beginner-Friendly Pattern

The Starting Point

Let’s dive into the classic crochet square. For anyone stepping into the art of crochet, this square pattern is a satisfying choice. It features a lightly open texture with a characteristic crochet motif formed by groups of 3 double crochets.

Here, I’m sharing the diagram or pattern I designed for crafting this square. It consists of 4 rounds, but you can continue crocheting to achieve your desired size or stop earlier for a smaller square.

How to Crochet a Classic Square

Each round starts with the first chain highlighted in bold for better visibility.

The diagram is read from the center and moves counterclockwise for right-handed crocheters.

Let’s get started!

⇒ Begin with a magic ring.

Round 1

⇒ Start with 6 chains (the first 3 chains represent a double crochet and the remaining 3 chains form the first corner of the square). Continue with 3 double crochets (insert the hook into the magic ring), 3 chains to create the second corner, another group of 3 double crochets, 3 chains for the third corner, 3 double crochets, and 3 chains for the fourth corner. End with 2 double crochets.

This diagram assumes you’re making the classic crochet square in a single color. So each round will close with a slip stitch in the 3rd and 4th chains (starting from the initial chain of the round).

Round 2

⇒ Crochet 6 chains in the air, 3 double crochets (inserting the hook in the first corner space), 1 chain in the air, [3 double crochets, 3 chains, 3 double crochets] (inserting the hook into the second corner space), 1 chain in the air. Repeat the instructions within brackets [ ] and the chain in the air for the third and fourth corners, ending the round with 2 double crochets to complete the motif for the first corner.

Round 3

⇒ Begin with 6 chains in the air, 3 double crochets (inserting the hook into the first corner space), 1 chain in the air, {3 double crochets (placing the hook under the chain in the air from the previous round), 1 chain in the air, “3 double crochets, 3 chains, 3 double crochets” (inserting the hook into the second corner space), 1 chain in the air}. Repeat the instructions within braces { } until you complete all four sides, ending the round with 2 double crochets to complete the motif for the first corner.

Round 4

⇒ Start with 6 chains in the air, 3 double crochets (inserting the hook into the first corner space), 1 chain in the air, {3 double crochets (placing the hook under the chain in the air from the previous round), 1 chain in the air, 3 double crochets (placing the hook under the chain in the air from the previous round), 1 chain in the air, “3 double crochets, 3 chains, 3 double crochets” (inserting the hook into the second corner space), 1 chain in the air}. Repeat the instructions within braces { } until you complete all four sides, ending the round with 2 double crochets to complete the motif for the first corner.

This completes the explanation of the diagram. If you want to make a larger square, repeat the fourth round. Adding groups of 3 double crochets along each side, wrapping the chain in the air from the previous round.
