Step 1

Start by crocheting six squares. I used classic granny squares, making three in a solid color and three with color combinations. Here are the links to the patterns:

Start by crocheting six squares. I used classic granny squares, making three in a solid color and three with color combinations. Here are the links to the patterns:

  1. Classic square
  2. Classic square with color change

Once each square is finished, crochet a round of single crochet around each square using the color chosen for the hat’s top and brim. This will make the seams neater.

Note: On one side of each square, skip the chain spaces between each group of 3 double crochets. This will create three sides with 19 stitches and one side with 16 stitches. This trick helps ensure that the 6 squares will align with the top of the hat [96 stitches].

Step 2

Join the 6 squares, aligning the 16-stitch sides at the top. You can use either a crochet hook or a yarn needle. If you need guidance, explore joining methods on my blog.

Step 3

It’s time to crochet the top of the hat, which is made with a circle of double crochets and a final round of single crochet.

Begin with a magic ring.

1st Row: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 11 dc into the magic ring, close with a slip stitch into the top of the ch-3 [12 stitches]

2nd Row: ch 3 + 1 dc in the same stitch as the previous slip stitch, 11 increases (2 dc in each stitch), close with a slip stitch [24 stitches]

3rd Row: ch 3, 1 increase in the next stitch, {1 dc, 1 increase} repeat 11 times, close with a slip stitch [36 stitches]

4th Row: ch 3, 1 dc, 1 increase, {2 dc, 1 increase} repeat 11 times, close with a slip stitch [48 stitches]

5th Row: ch 3, 2 dc, 1 increase, {3 dc, 1 increase} repeat 11 times, close with a slip stitch [60 stitches]

6th Row: ch 3, 3 dc, 1 increase, {4 dc, 1 increase} repeat 11 times, close with a slip stitch [72 stitches]

7th Row: ch 3, 4 dc, 1 increase, {5 dc, 1 increase} repeat 11 times, close with a slip stitch [84 stitches]

8th Row: ch 3, 5 dc, 1 increase, {6 dc, 1 increase} repeat 11 times, close with a slip stitch [96 stitches]

The circle should measure 19 cm in diameter. Do not cut the yarn, as you’ll use it in the next step.

To adjust for a larger or smaller hat, simply continue or reduce the rows using the same increase pattern.

Step 4

Join the circular top to the square strip, aligning the 96 stitches. Stitch markers will be helpful for this step.

Step 5

The brim of the hat is made entirely with single crochet stitches. Start the first row at the right edge of any square.

1st Row: ch 1, {18 sc, 1 inc} repeat 6 times, close with a slip stitch [120 stitches]

2nd Row: ch 1, {19 sc, 1 inc} repeat 6 times, close with a slip stitch [126 stitches]

3rd Row: ch 1, {20 sc, 1 inc} repeat 6 times, close with a slip stitch [132 stitches]

4th and 5th Rows: (2 rows) ch 1, 132 sc [132 stitches]
