How to Crochet a Star

How to Crochet a Star? Let’s Make This Easy and Quick Crochet Star Pattern Together!

This star crochet pattern is quick, easy, and ideal for using up leftover yarn—just a few grams are needed.

It’s perfect as an applique, a garland, or you can even add a hook to use it as an ornament.

Here are two options you can make with the same pattern:

  1. Single Layer
  2. Double Layer (with stuffing)

How to Crochet This Beautiful Star

By using different yarn weights and crochet hook sizes, you can create a variety of stars in different sizes and colors, whether you prefer them solid or multicolored. For double-layer stars, you’ll need polyester stuffing to fill them out.

The instructions are as follows…

OPTION 1 [SINGLE-STAR]

Start with a magic ring.

1st Round: Chain 1, work 5 single crochet, close with a slip stitch [5 stitches]

2nd Round: Chain 1, work 5 increases (2 single crochet in each stitch), close with a slip stitch [10 stitches]

3rd Round: Chain 1, {1 single crochet, 1 increase} repeat 5 times, close with a slip stitch [15 stitches]

4th Round: Chain 1, {1 single crochet, 3 half-double crochet in the same stitch, 1 single crochet} repeat 5 times, close with a slip stitch [25 stitches]

5th Round: Chain 1, {1 single crochet, 1 half-double crochet, 3 double crochet in the same stitch, 1 half-double crochet, 1 single crochet} repeat 5 times, close with a slip stitch [35 stitches]

6th Round: Chain 1, {2 single crochet, 1 half-double crochet, 3 double crochet in the same stitch, 1 half-double crochet, 2 single crochet} repeat 5 times, close with a slip stitch [45 stitches]

Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

(If you want a larger crochet star, continue following the logic of Rounds 5 and 6, adding 1 single crochet at the start and end of each repeat.)

OPTION 2 [DOUBLE-STAR with Stuffing]

  1. Crochet a star following the instructions above (same as Option 1).
  2. Crochet a second star just like the first one, but after finishing Round 6, don’t cut the yarn.
  3. Place both stars back to back (wrong sides facing each other), and insert the hook through only the back loops of both stars.
  4. Slip stitch all around the edge.
  5. When you have 4-5 stitches left to close, stuff the star with polyester filling as much as you like.
  6. Finish the remaining stitches, cut the yarn, and weave in the end.

Ideas for Using Crochet a Star

I made several stars in different sizes and colors and created a garland to decorate my front door. They’re perfect for special occasions or celebrations like birthdays or Christmas.

You could also add a hook to hang them from a door or window handle, attach them to your bag strap, use them as part of a mobile for a nursery, or even as wall decor. They also make adorable keychains!

They look beautiful hanging from the Christmas tree, and make a unique gift or even a lovely decoration for a gift wrap.

I loved making these stars for this blog entry—I couldn’t stop!
