How to Make Tassels

Tassels are a versatile decoration element used for a wide range of projects, from home decor items to clothing. I recently added tassels to a crochet triangle shawl, each measuring 7.5 cm (3 inches) long, made with the same yarn.

What you’ll need:

  • Any type of yarn
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • A piece of cardboard the desired height of the tassel

How to make tassels: Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Wrap the yarn around the cardboard. I wrapped mine 40 times, but you can adjust this based on how thick you want the tassel to be.
  2. Tie the yarn. Cut a 20 cm (8 inch) piece of yarn and fold it in half. Thread it through the top of the wrapped yarn and cardboard.
  3. Secure the yarn. Thread the loose ends through the loop that formed on the opposite side,
  4. Tighten it, and slide it up to the top of the cardboard.

  5. Cut and Remove the Cardboard. Using scissors, cut the yarn on the side opposite from where you just tied it, and then remove the cardboard.
  6. Tie Off the Tassel. Cut another 40 cm (16 inch) piece of yarn. This will hold all the yarn strands together to give the tassel its classic look.
  7. Wrap and Secure. To make this step clearer, I used a contrasting color yarn.
  8. Fold this yarn so one side is 10 cm (4 inches) and the other 30 cm (12 inches). Place the shorter end along the top of the tassel, with the fold aligned with the top edge. Holding it with your thumb, wrap the longer end around the tassel strands from bottom to top, about 1 cm (0.4 inches) from the top. I wrapped it 5 times.

  9. Tuck and pull. Thread the wrapped yarn through the loop that formed at the top. Gently pull the shorter end of the yarn resting on the tassel to hide the knot underneath the wrap.
  10. Finishing touches. Using a yarn needle, you can tuck the remaining yarn tail through to the opposite side and under the wrap for a clean finish.
  11. Trim the ends. Trim the ends to even them out.
  12. Your tassel is complete!
